May’ 2017 I was strolling along the sides of Dal lake, Srinagar when my gaze stopped on a billboard, It read “CAFÉ WINTERFELL”. Ever wondered where Daenerys Targarian ot Jon Snow would hold council or even where George R.R Martin would plot the next death? It would be here. Every inch of the place “Brick by Brick” resonated with a medieval countryside Inn (without the blood stains of course!).
The owners of the joint said, “ A lot of thought has gone into ensuring that the experience is as authentic as possible. All the merchandise inside the Winterfell café has been procured from HBO originals merchandise. The ceiling, floors, walls, in café merchandise, everything has been kept in accordance to the theme. They played the famous GOT metrognome on request and the ambience couldn’t get any better. There lies a throne in the middle with famous quotes from prominent characters all along the walls. Jon Snow, Tyrian Lannister, you name it-they have it.They have also maintained a mini library with some classic reads, Game Of Thrones obviously being one of them.
Not only is the environment upto the mark, but also the food. Winterfell café serve some lip-smacking dishes, (like the Lannisters, they DO pay their debt). The cuisine mainly focuses on Italian with some lovely hot brews to go with it.
The owner said that they had opened on 11’th December and Kashmir got first snow of the season the very next day. Also, that year, by far had been the longest winter Kashmir had ever seen. Looks like winter did come in the north afterall.I discussed some interesting ideas with Kamran like screening GOT S7 which they did, other thought was to have theme related dish and beverage menu. (Unfortunately they do not serve wine, or ale)
Even if you are not the fan of the series, you still cannot miss this quaint cafe, (I swear it, by the old gods and new). If you are planning a visit to Srinagar anytime soon, I suggest you add one more place to see on your itinerary. An innovative ambiance to relate with, food for thought and a humble service – That’s all one ever needs.
The landscape of Indian Dining is changing and places like café WINTERFELL are giving the food fanatics more than an experience to remember. May food gods bless Winterfell café for ages to come. Valar Moghulis!
