BALURGHAT: On a specific information provided by the BSF Intelligence branch, a special operation was carried out by the troops of 41 Bn BSF along with BSF Intelligence team near village Pransagar under PS Gangarampur of Dakshin Dinajpur district which is about 08 kms from the International Boundary. BSF party seized appx 8 pounds (02 Jars of 4 pounds each) of Snake venom worth about Rs.12 crore as per value of International black market and apprehended 01 Indian national namely Sudeb Tigga(37) of Gangarampur.
From the preliminary questioning, it appears that the apprehended person is a carrier. The inputs regarding smuggling of Snake venom through North & South Dinajpur were being received since long. This is the second case under the AOR of North Bengal Frontier BSF. Earlier one container with appx 02 pounds of Snake venom in liquid form was seized from South Dinajpur district. This time out of 02, one is in liquid form and another is in powder form. The seized items along with the apprehended person were handed over to Forest Officials.
Snake venom is collected from a number of poisonous Snakes by a process known as milking of Snakes. This poison collected from a particular species of Snakes is pooled and purified and freeze dried (Lyophilized) and is stored safely in sealed jars for years. Some of the proteins in Snake venom have very specific effects on various biological functions including blood coagulation, blood pressure regulation and transmission of the nervous or muscular impulse and have been developed for use a pharmacological and diagnostic tools and even useful drugs.
