Sunday 11th, Siliguri: The recently formed Siliguri based Durjoy Advocacy Group, a rights based advocacy group for the people with disabilities organized their first comprehensive workshop and launch programme today with collaboration with Siliguri Greater Lions Eye Hospital. The programme was organized to create awareness on the “Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016” and discuss in detail the provisions as per the Government of India to build a receptive environment & attitude among the masses through information ensuring the rights of a persons with disabilities to education, accessibility to all government and private infrastructure, in mode of transportation and education that may ensure their rightful employability.
On the occasion Chief Guest of the programme Mayor Siliguri Municipality Sri. Asok Narayan Bhattacharya said, ‘Indian constitution safeguards the rights of the persons with disability like it takes care of its citizens who belong from other minority sections of the society’ and showed his utmost regards to the Advocacy group for bringing this issue up into the conscience of the government functionaries in Siliguri.
Guest of honour Past International Director of Lions Club International Lion G.S. Hora gave a detailed comparative of the disability supporting infrastructure and masses awareness campaigns that have happened across the world and how much we need to include this still left out group of individual into the development processes and make our infrastructures, employability and education disability friendly. At the programme was also present Ms. Gangotri Chakraborty, President, North Bengal Council for Disabled who stressed on the pride that one has to carry to earn respect from the general so called normal populace of the region. In her thought provoking speech she insisted that everyone is in some or the other way challenged or disabled and disability of the mind that does not accept a physically disabled is what is true disability. The programme further proceeded with a detailed presentation by National Disability Consultant and former National Criketer Indian National Blind Team Sri. Vivek Singh who in detail discussed the Act and the provisions under the Act that ensures not only equally rights to the people with disability but also penalizes them who abuses/ cause harm/ commit an act of fraud towards a disable.
The programme began with the opening speech by Dipto Ghosh Chowdhury, President of Durjoy Advocacy group who expressed his joy in coming together to this common platform of Forums, NGOs, People with disability, Government Stakeholders and informed the visiting guests of the vision with which Durjoy has been set up to ensure implementation of the existing ACT and include government policies in all its projects, private infrastructures across the region. Kavita Golyan, Secretary of Durjoy Advocacy Group expressed her sincere regards to the visiting guests and the volunteers. She informed on the plight of persons with disability and how much there is a need for sensitivity in addressing their issue and make it heard to all to ensure an inclusive society where they are not left behind. The programme was commemorated with all the institutions and members present including Prerna Educational Centre, Goodricke School Of Education, Siliguri Uday, Matri Chaya, Bhimbhar Drishtiheen Sneha Ashram etc sharing their thoughts, experiences and methods to access government provisions in place for the people with disability.
