Twenty four post-graduate scholars from Department of Horticulture, Aromatic & Medicinal Plants (HAMP) from Mizoram University, Aizwal, Mizoram visited ICAR-NRC on Orchids, Pakyong on 18/03/2017 to observe R&D activities of institute. Faculty members Dr. Awadesh Kumar, Assistant Professor and other technical staff accompanied scholars as a part of the exposure-cum-educational tour. The academic visit was aimed to educate and create awareness on orchid conservation & cultivation. Program scheduled in afternoon session, comprising an overview of Indian orchidology, visit to ex-situ conservation, orchid varieties, hi-tech horticulture, hydroponics and vertical farming and tissue culture & biotechnology laboratory.
On behalf the institute, Dr. R. Devadas, Senior Scientist (Plant Breeding) presented a brief lecture on overview of institute and research developments covering DNA barcoding, farmer’s rights, IPM modules, bio-pesticides and model floriculture. Dr. N. Sailo, Scientist (Plant Physiology) and Ms. Tshering Chomu Bhutia, Technical Staff extended assistance during field level interaction and explained developments with various labs. Visiting staff and scholars said that visit and interaction was very informative and motivated to take up their research work on orchids.
